In a cruel world, we have to be tough in order to obtain what we need.
A recent comment I strongly disagreed / digressed with from a classmate motivated me to bring this topic up.
This semester, I ended up taking a class called: Introduction to Life Span Development.
One type of assignment we do is a weekly thought piece.
This one in particular asked us to formulate a theory about one aspect of human development and create a hypothesis that relates to it.
I wrote about the social aspect of human development and how social media hinders it.
A few days after posting my submission, a classmate responded.
Now, I don’t know about you, but when I read his comment, I read it in the whiniest voice you could imagine.
“There are always going to be people that will act up and be mean for no reason at all. How do you think that we can stop this if there are any ways?”
First off, there is no way to stop it.
People will always do and say whatever they please.
Second of all, toughen up!
If I was able to say what I truly wanted to say, I probably would have been kicked out the class for making the kid cry.
Now, obviously, the instance above is just some word play.
In the real world, real things are at stake.
This is why you need to be tough.
People will walk all over you just to get what they want.
They’ll gladly take it from you and they’re not remorseful about it.
You need to be tough because there will always be someone else trying to blow your candle out.
If someone blows your candle out; you stop shining.
I see people everyday:
- Cry over something ‘mean’ someone said to them.
- Give up after being beat at something they aren’t good at.
- Submit to someone else’s demands when it isn’t in their best interests.
This is where being weak gets you.
It gets you to cry, give up and screw yourself.
If you don’t understand this, you might as well close your browser and stop reading.
Now onto how to be tough.
You need to REMOVE the emotional side of the equation out of important and meaningless situations.
If you cannot do this, you will always become a victim of your own emotions.
Being able to put aside how you feel and think about something allows you to think about logical outcomes.
This is how we win.
Most people will think emotionally about the situation they’re in.
This clouds your judgement.
You end up making an irrational decision based off of how you feel; not off of what you know is right.
Even companies will weaponize your emotions and use them against you.
For example, a company selling a shoddy weight loss product might say:
“Lose 10 pounds and look better in front of friends and family!”
This is an effective way to sell since most think emotionally and big companies know this.
Don’t become a victim of this.
The Caveat For The Logical Thinkers:
Now of course, I’m not saying cut out all emotion from your life.
You need to be a Jack of All Trades and a Master of One! (Notice how I didn’t say ‘none’)
Being emotional is a part of being human.
However, you need to conquer your emotional side and know when and how to deploy it.
Some will sit here and tell you that this would be deceptive and sneaky… only if it is used in such a way though!
Others will tell you that there are vast benefits in learning to conquer oneself.
What you do with what you know is ultimately your choice.
Until Next Time,
